Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME)
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME), is a long-term condition that causes extreme tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest. It affects energy levels, concentration, memory, and physical ability. The exact cause is still unknown, but it’s thought to involve problems with the immune system, nervous system, and the body’s ability to produce energy.
Symptoms
• Persistent, overwhelming fatigue (not relieved by rest or sleep)
• Post-exertional malaise (symptoms worsen after activity, even small amounts)
• Cognitive difficulties (‘brain fog’ — memory, concentration problems)
• Muscle or joint pain • Sleep problems (unrefreshing or disrupted sleep)
• Headaches, sore throat, or flu-like symptoms
• Dizziness or palpitations
Living With CFS/ME CFS/ME doesn’t just make you tired — it can feel like your body’s energy system has shut down. Even small tasks, like making a meal or having a shower, can leave someone completely drained for days. Life becomes about pacing, rationing energy carefully, and learning to live within strict limits. “Chronic fatigue is not about being tired. It’s about having no energy reserves. Even basic daily activities can feel impossible, and pushing yourself only makes things worse.” CFS/ME can feel isolating because symptoms are invisible, and others may not understand why someone ‘looks fine’ but cannot function normally.
Research & Treatments
There is no cure for CFS/ME. Research suggests links to viral infections, immune system dysfunction, and problems with energy metabolism.
Current treatment approaches focus on managing symptoms:
• Pacing and energy management (avoiding ‘boom and bust’ cycles)
• Pain relief for muscle and joint symptoms
• Sleep support (improving rest quality)
• Gentle physiotherapy or movement (if tolerated)
• Psychological support (CBT for coping, not as a cure)
Research is ongoing into the overlap between CFS/ME, fibromyalgia, and long COVID.
