Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain and sensitivity, linked to the way the nervous system processes pain signals. While often described clinically as a 'pain-processing disorder,' many sufferers experience it as something far more complex and life-altering.

Symptoms

• Widespread muscle pain and stiffness

• Extreme fatigue

• Sleep problems (unrefreshing sleep, insomnia)

• ‘Fibro fog’ (trouble concentrating, memory issues)

• Heightened sensitivity to pain, noise, lights, or temperature

• Headaches and migraines

• Digestive issues (such as IBS)

Living With Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia doesn’t just bring pain — it can feel like it takes away your whole sense of self. Life becomes unpredictable, not just during flare-ups but even on so-called ‘normal’ days. Many people describe it as invisible: outsiders can’t see it, but it changes everything. “It feels like you lose sight of the person you once were. You have to get to know yourself all over again, because you are no longer that person. It changes your whole existence.”

Research & Treatments Official guidance often focuses on exercise (such as walking, swimming, or stretching), medications, and cognitive behavioural therapy. But experiences vary greatly, and for some, exercise can worsen symptoms dramatically. Many sufferers and researchers believe fibromyalgia may be closely linked to trauma and the body’s constant ‘self-protection’ response, which can heighten pain signals. Research is ongoing into links between fibromyalgia, the nervous system, and immune function.

Personal Perspective

“For me, being told to exercise was harmful. I tried, and ended up in hospital with pain so severe it felt like my ribcage was collapsing. I believe there should be more focus on diet and lifestyle support, especially for those who’ve gained weight through the inability to stay active. Our realities deserve to be heard alongside the research.”
