Lupus

Lupus is a long-term autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs. It can cause inflammation in the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, and other areas of the body. The severity of lupus varies—some people have mild symptoms while others may develop serious complications.

Common Symptoms

• Fatigue and low energy

• Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling

• Skin rashes (including the butterfly-shaped rash across the nose and cheeks)

• Sensitivity to sunlight

• Mouth ulcers

• Fever

• Hair loss

• In severe cases: organ involvement (kidneys, heart, lungs, brain)

Impact on Daily Life

Living with lupus often means managing unpredictable flare-ups, which can disrupt work, social life, and personal plans. Fatigue is one of the most challenging symptoms, often leading to the need for rest and pacing activities. The condition can also affect mental health due to its chronic nature, uncertainty, and visible signs such as skin rashes.

Coping & Self-Management

• Follow medical advice from specialists (usually rheumatologists).

• Protect skin with sunscreen and clothing to avoid flares triggered by sunlight.

• Prioritise rest and manage fatigue by pacing activities.

• Maintain a balanced diet and stay physically active where possible.

• Build emotional support networks—friends, family, or peer support groups.
