Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term autoimmune condition that causes inflammation, pain, and swelling in the joints. Unlike osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear, RA occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints. This can lead to stiffness, deformity, and fatigue, making daily activities challenging. RA can affect anyone, but it is more common in women and often develops between the ages of 30 and 60.

Common Symptoms

- Joint pain, swelling, and tenderness (often starting in the hands and feet)

- Morning stiffness lasting longer than 30 minutes

- Fatigue and lack of energy

- Weight loss and loss of appetite

- In severe cases, joint deformities and mobility issues

Coping Strategies

**Medication & Treatment**: -Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologics can slow progression.

- **Physiotherapy**: Gentle exercises help maintain mobility and reduce stiffness.

Balancing activity with rest prevents flare-ups.

- **Joint Protection**: Using aids and supportive footwear reduces strain.

- **Support Networks**: Joining RA support groups can provide emotional reassurance.
