Sjögren’s Syndrome

Overview

Sjögren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the glands that produce moisture, such as the tear and saliva glands. It can occur on its own (primary Sjögren’s) or alongside other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus (secondary Sjögren’s).

Symptoms & Daily Life Impact

- Dry eyes– gritty, burning, sore, or feeling like there’s sand in them.

- Dry mouth– difficulty swallowing, speaking, or eating dry foods; increased risk of dental problems

.- Joint pain and stiffness – similar to arthritis, affecting mobility.

- Severe fatigue – one of the most common and limiting symptoms.

- Other complications – dry skin, vaginal dryness, digestive issues, or lung/kidney involvement in severe cases.

Living with Sjögren’s can feel isolating. Fatigue and chronic dryness often make day to day activities exhausting. Simple things like reading, driving, or even talking for long periods can feel overwhelming. Many people describe having to carefully “ration” their energy and use daily routines like carrying eye drops, drinking water constantly, and scheduling frequent breaks.

Support & Treatment

There’s currently no cure for Sjögren’s, but symptoms can be managed through:

- Artificial tears, gels, and saliva substitutes.

- Regular dental care.

- Medications to reduce inflammation or stimulate saliva production.

- Support for fatigue management (pacing, gentle exercise, rest planning).

Emotional support is equally important, as the fatigue and hidden nature of the illness can impact self esteem and relationships.
